Persistent Car Odor After Cleaning? Why the Smell Keeps Coming Back

You clean the seats and carpets. You vacuum the interior. You use an air freshener or fragrance spray. The car smells better — but after sitting closed in the hot sun, that unpleasant odor is back.

Persistent car odors from cigarette smoke, food and drink spills, pets, dampness and other sources can be extremely difficult to eliminate. Physical cleaning is essential, but sometimes the visible source has been removed while the odor problem remains.

I experienced this personally several years ago.

My young son spilled milk on the back seat of my car. We cleaned the seat repeatedly and tried fragrance sprays, but the smell kept returning.

It was particularly bad during the summer. When the vehicle sat closed in the hot sun, opening the door could release an almost overpowering smell.

The odor disappeared — and it never returned during the remaining two to three years I owned the vehicle.

Why Does Persistent Car Odor Come Back After Cleaning?

Air fresheners and perfumes may temporarily change what we smell, but masking an odor is different from treating the compounds contributing to it.

In a separate controlled OH-Feel demonstration using cigarette odor, two identical chambers containing the same quantity of cigarette butts were compared. Under the test conditions, the hydroxyl-treated chamber showed a greater than 95% reduction in measured Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOCs).

That demonstration does not mean every vehicle or every odor will achieve the same result, but it provides measured evidence of hydroxyl technology acting on volatile compounds associated with persistent odor.

Beyond Cleaning: An Opportunity for Professional Car Detailers

Professional detailers can make a vehicle look almost new again. But what happens when a beautifully cleaned vehicle still smells of cigarette smoke, spoiled food, pets or dampness?

This creates an interesting opportunity for car-detailing and car-wash businesses.

After properly cleaning the physical source, a business could offer hydroxyl odor treatment as an additional service rather than simply applying fragrance to the vehicle before returning it to the customer.

The OH-Feel QTV1, with coverage up to 30 m², is particularly interesting for professional use because of its greater treatment capacity. Treatment time would depend on the type and severity of the odor, and longer stationary treatments can use an appropriate external power supply rather than relying on the customer’s vehicle battery.
