As such they are principally \u2018filters\u2019 and share the same shortcomings as all other filter-based air purifiers:\u200b\u200b<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Filter-based technologies only reach their maximum level of whole room pollution reduction (typically circa 50% \u2013 Novoselac &amp; Siegel 2009) after more than an hour.<\/li>\n<li>Filters remove particles from the air passing through the filter but the filtered air they emit is immediately re-contaminated by mixing.<\/li>\n<li>\u200bStratification (caused by warm air rising) and eddies (circling air), and the fact that existing air is constantly being replaced by new air from outside, means that much of the air in a room will never even pass through\u00a0the filter.\u200b This effect is\u00a0often compounded by a lack of filter \u2018suction\u2019 compared to room size.<\/li>\n<li>As filters don\u2019t produce a hydroxyl cascade, they don\u2019t decontaminate surfaces or neutralize viruses, bacteria, mould or pollens within the room.<\/li>\n<li>While larger, more powerful, noisier fans can filter more air, in practical terms\u00a0they can never overcome these failings.\u200b<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>Sadly, the claims made for this basic technology are often grossly misleading, including an evidence free implication that sufficient hydroxyls spread outwards from the device to effectively clean the air in the room and surfaces.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div id=\"accordion-639961447\" class=\"accordion-item\">\n\t\t<a id=\"accordion-639961447-label\" class=\"accordion-title plain\" href=\"#accordion-item-ionization\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion-639961447-content\">\n\t\t\t<button class=\"toggle\" aria-label=\"Toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t<span>IONIZATION<\/span>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<div id=\"accordion-639961447-content\" class=\"accordion-inner\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-639961447-label\">\n\t\t\t\n<p><strong>What is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>Ionizer air purifiers release ions (charged particles) into the air.\u00a0 It is postulated that these ions collide with airborne particles such as dust or pathogens, thereby giving them a charge. The now charged particles are then attracted to surfaces, such as walls and curtains, or sink to the floor, taking them out of the air.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Under some conditions, and over a relatively lengthy period of time, the presence of high levels of ions has been shown to damage some types of bacteria, viruses and mould sufficiently to make them non-viable.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\u200bHowever, the reality is starkly different \u2026<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><strong>Disadvantages<\/strong><\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>As with HEPA filters, ionizers have the drawback that they only effect particulates, not gasses.<\/li>\n<li>Maintaining a sufficiently high intensity of ions throughout an entire space is practically impossible, as evidenced by\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airora.com\/uploads\/2\/6\/3\/0\/26308133\/boeing-use-of-bipolar-ionization-for-disinfection-within-airplanes.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Boeing\u2019s latest research<\/a>, which was unable to demonstrate any material biocidal effect on surface-borne pathogens during their extensive testing.<\/li>\n<li>Any effects tend to be very local as ion intensity drops off naturally and rapidly away from the device.\u00a0Indeed, LifeAir\u2019s own published data shows that only around 1% of ions remain active just 1m away from the device!<\/li>\n<li>Local to the device, particulates, including microbes, may be charged and then adhere to nearby surfaces (like soft furnishings), but they will easily be disturbed and made airborne again.<\/li>\n<li>Even if they were generally effective in removing\u00a0particulates (including viruses and bacteria) from the air to surfaces in the room then, as the particles gradually lose their charge, or they are disturbed,\u00a0they will be re-adsorbed back into the air.<\/li>\n<li>If an ionized pathogen is inhaled, it is more likely to stick to the walls of your respiratory system thus increasing the chance of an adverse reaction.<\/li>\n<li>Ionizers often increase the level of ozone in a room, possibly beyond safe levels.\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b Indeed\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.airora.com\/uploads\/2\/6\/3\/0\/26308133\/fletcher2007_article_bactericidalactionofpositivean.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">research at the University of Leeds<\/a>\u00a0has shown that pathogens that eventually become non-viable in the presence of ions are primarily damaged by the related ozone and not by the ions nor their associated charge!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>Sadly, there are grossly misleading and false claims being made for this type of air cleaner.<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n\t\n\t<div id=\"accordion-119214851\" class=\"accordion-item\">\n\t\t<a id=\"accordion-119214851-label\" class=\"accordion-title plain\" href=\"#accordion-item-germicidal-uv-in-duct\" aria-expanded=\"false\" aria-controls=\"accordion-119214851-content\">\n\t\t\t<button class=\"toggle\" aria-label=\"Toggle\"><i class=\"icon-angle-down\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/button>\n\t\t\t<span>GERMICIDAL UV IN-DUCT<\/span>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t<div id=\"accordion-119214851-content\" class=\"accordion-inner\" aria-labelledby=\"accordion-119214851-label\">\n\t\t\t\n<div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germicidal UV in Duct<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is it?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germicidal UV in duct is UVC lights installed in your HVAC system to clean out the ductwork system.
